🧶 How to Crochet a Single Crochet Stitch (Beginner Friendly)

You’ve already mastered the slip knot and chain stitch, and now it’s time to take your next magical step — learning the single crochet stitch. ✨

This simple but powerful stitch is one of the building blocks of crochet. It’s used in amigurumi, blankets, scarves, and so many of the adorable plushies we love making at Princess Toy Shop.

🌸 What You’ll Need

  • 🧶 Yarn (medium-weight is easiest to handle)

  • 🪡 Crochet hook (5 mm / H-8 recommended)

  • 💕 Your completed chain (about 10 chains from the last lesson)

✨ Step-by-Step: How to Single Crochet

Step 1: Insert Your Hook

Skip the first chain closest to your hook. Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.

Step 2: Yarn Over

Wrap the yarn over your hook from back to front.

Step 3: Pull Through

Pull the yarn through the chain. You now have two loops on your hook.

Step 4: Yarn Over Again

Wrap the yarn over the hook once more.

Step 5: Pull Through Both Loops

Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. You’ve just made your first single crochet stitch! 🎉

🌷 Keep Going

Continue this pattern — insert, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through both loops — all the way across your chain.

When you reach the end of the row:

  1. Chain 1 (this brings your yarn up to the next row’s height).

  2. Turn your work around.

  3. Repeat the same steps across the new row.

Keep practicing until your rows look even and smooth.

💖 Helpful Tips

  • Keep your tension relaxed — not too tight, not too loose.

  • If your edges start to curve, you may be adding or missing stitches. Count them in each row to stay consistent.

  • Single crochet stitches are short and sturdy — perfect for plushies and cozy textures!

🌿 Why It Matters

The single crochet stitch is the foundation for nearly every amigurumi pattern you’ll make. Once you’re comfortable with it, you can create plush toys, baskets, washcloths, and even start designing your own projects.

It’s a stitch of patience and peace — one that lets your mind settle as your hands move with gentle rhythm.
